‘Ottawa’ Review: Young Yang’s Talent on Display as Ottawa Symphony Orchestra Opens Season
In August, 2015 Chopin Competition runner-up Charles Richard-Hamelin brought the house down at Chamberfest, proving himself more than worthy of the hype. On Monday, Alain Trudel and the Ottawa Symphony presented the other young Canadian whose Chopin win last year made him an overnight sensation.
Tony Yang was just 16 when he claimed fifth prize at the competition in Warsaw last fall. He became the youngest laureate in the event’s storied history, winning an extra $15,000 U.S. for being the youngest finalist that year
Not surprisingly, Yang’s concert bookings have increased significantly in the year since, although he still has to squeeze his engagements in between classes at Harvard, where he’s a freshman.
