Body found in river near Wakefield Covered Bridge
Police in western Quebec have found a body in the Gatineau River near the Wakefield Covered Bridge during their search for a 23-year-old man from Zimbabwe who was swept away by the current on Thursday.
MRC des Collines police say the search began at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday after friends of the man said he entered the water without warning and was carried away.
The man, who is a student at Algonquin College in Ottawa, could not swim and was intoxicated when he was swept away, friends told police. They had been sitting at the foot of the bridge.
Police, firefighters and volunteer divers combed the river on Thursday evening for several hours but suspended the search at 10:30 p.m.
Ground searches continued overnight. The river search resumed Friday morning with police divers from Sûreté du Québec assisting MRC des Collines.
A police spokesperson said the man’s family had been notified and were set to travel to Wakefield from Africa.
The body was found early Friday evening
