Campaign trail a rough road
Eighteen-hour workdays. Arbitrary meal times. A race to reach several destinations across Canada in a day.
Such is life on the campaign trail.
“Once the day starts, it’s like, you come off the shoot and the rodeo has just begun,” says Stockwell Day, once the leader of the Canadian Alliance Party.
In the race to become prime minister, it’s easy for the little things to be overlooked.
It isn’t easy eating nutritious while on a campaign trail, said Day, looking back on his experiences during the 2000-01 federal leadership race.
“Anytime you stop somewhere, people want to be generous and load you up with food or the latest baked pie,” he said with a chuckle.
Jim Harris, former leader of the Green Party of Canada, recalled his own experiences campaigning during the 2006 federal election.
