Witness recalls crash that killed three kids
A Vaughan man who arrived seconds after an alleged impaired driving crash that killed three children and their grandfather said he couldn’t sleep because of the horror he witnessed.
Zabi Akbari, who lives near the crash scene at Kirby Rd. and Kipling Ave., choked back tears when he was told all of the children involved in Sunday’s crash had died. He feared the worst when he called 911, describing the scene to the operator.
“It was a very bad situation,” he said Monday. “I had to tell them there were kids involved and there were no signs of breathing.”
Akbari checked on the people in the van but they were trapped. Responders were just going to send a land ambulance at first, but that wouldn’t be enough, he remembered telling them.
“Originally they were calling for just an ambulance, I told them, ‘No, I think you need an air ambulance, as well.’ It was sad to see.”
