Tarantula latest creepy crawler sighting
Life’s a zoo — at least for Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo in Ottawa.
Just a week after picking up “Black Betty,” a black widow spider found in Barrhaven, the zoo has received another call for a found spider: A tarantula.
“For people that are scared of the spiders, it’s sure to give them the willies,” said Paul Goulet, owner of Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo.
The rose-haired tarantula, a native of Chile, was found between two houses in Carp Sunday.
Goulet is used to picking up exotic pets found wandering around the city throughout the year.
For him, it’s all about protecting both the animals and the ecosystem.
Goulet said there are a number of introduced species in the Ottawa area, including red-eared slider turtles on Petrie Island that are originally from the southern United States.
Non-native species can have “catastrophic effects” to the ecosystem, since they end up competing with the local species for food and space, he said.
