Woman feared Yatim would kill her, court told
A knife-wielding, stoned Sammy Yatim attempted to slash a woman’s throat aboard the Dundas streetcar minutes before police fatally shot him, a jury heard Tuesday.
In his opening statement, defence lawyer Peter Brauti described the terrifying incident between Yatim, 18, and Bridget McGregor on the streetcar on July 27, 2013.
McGregor will testify that she would have died if she hadn’t dodged Yatim’s blade thrust at her throat, Brauti said.
“She will tell you that had she not jerked back as Mr. Yatim attempted to slash her, she does not believe she would be alive today,” said Brauti, who represents Toronto Police Const. James Forcillo.
The 32-year-old officer shot Yatim repeatedly as he stood alone on the empty streetcar. He has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder.
