The Ottawa Hospital Foundation still needs $2.3 million to reach its $14-million goal so it can consolidate the work of three locations into one expanded state-of-the-art facility at the Ottawa General campus.
“The technology is obviously amazing but I think for women the waiting is what is one of the most difficult things,” van Oldenbarneveld said after a news conference about fundraising efforts. Watch her interview with CBC’s Roger Dubois in the player above.
“If you don’t know what’s actually going on with your body, that’s when the darkness sets in and that’s when you just become so terrified. So the faster you find out what’s going on with you, the faster you can begin treatment, the faster you can get healed.”
She begins her second round of chemotherapy on Friday.
“I’m feeling strong and optimistic, you know, with the ups and downs,” she said.
At least 1,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Eastern Ontario this year, according to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
