CHEO. Royal see increase in mental health patients
CHEO and The Royal Ottawa may be forced to reallocate more beds and resources to deal with the increasing number of young mental health patients coming through their doors.
A report release Thursday shows both CHEO and The Royal have seen a 75% increase since 2009 in the total number of emergency room visits by mental health patients.
According to Dr. Kathleen Pajer, chief of psychiatry at CHEO, the source of the mental illnesse could stem from increased use of technology and the constant presence of peers.
“Even though technology and social media do have positive uses it also means that a kid is never alone,” said Pajer. “But now kids are under constant stress of peer interaction.
