Cops reviewing new street check rules
Police will continue its “current practice in place” until the new provincial regulations on street checks kick in, says Ottawa Chief Charles Bordeleau.
His statement Thursday comes a day after the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services released its draft of new street check regulations.
“The draft regulations are complex and contain significant new requirements for police services,” wrote Bordeleau in an emailed statement. “They prohibit the random and arbitrary collection of identifying information by police; and establish clear new rules for voluntary police-public interactions where identifying information is collected by officers.”
Bordeleau maintains that Ottawa police officers do not perform random and arbitrary street checks.
