‘Ottawa’ First all Gender Washrooms to be Introduced at Ottawa
The University of Ottawa will soon introduce the school’s first gender neutral washroom stalls.
The two washrooms will be on the 11th floor of the university’s Faculty of Social Sciences building, where the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies is located.
Kathryn Trevenen, the institute’s interim director, said a call for change came after the school heard from students — either those associated with the LGBT community or those who don’t associate with either gender — who are uncomfortable with walking into gender-specific washrooms.
“They were saying how difficult it was to access safe and respectful bathroom facilities in the world period, but specifically on campus,” said Trevenen, adding that “all gender” washroom facilities also work well for families and students with disabilities who are accompanied by an attendant of the opposite gender.
