‘Ottawa’ Cross-Dressing Bank Robber Did it for Girlfriend Who Faked Cancer, Edmonton Court Hears
A cross-dressing Wetaskiwin bank robber was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday for a dozen heists he claims were done for a girlfriend who falsely told him she was dying of cancer.
Court has heard Christopher Zubko, 53, told police he committed the robberies because he wanted to help her out financially.
A tearful Zubko said Tuesday he now believes the woman to whom he gave both his entire savings and the ill-gotten proceeds of the robberies did not really have terminal cancer.
“They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions,” said Zubko, addressing court at the end of his sentencing hearing.
“I was entangled in a web of deception,” he said, adding he now feels like a “fool” and is “ashamed” of his actions.
Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Vital Ouellette accepted Zubko’s story and said he had no doubt Zubko had been “naive and gullible” at the time and was just trying to help somebody, as opposed to the typical motivation of greed o
