‘Ottawa’ Coffee and lies: Seniors’ breakfast Club Keeps on the Sunny Side
Five tables form a single row at the McDonald’s restaurant on Bank Street in South Keys. There used to be four of them in two arrangements near the soft drink dispensers, but the restaurant added a fifth solely to accommodate this one nameless breakfast club.
Its members share geography (they all live in the neighbourhood), age (on this particular day, nine of the 10 present are septuagenarians or older), and a genuine love of life, humour and each other’s company.
With a core of about a dozen regulars augmented by 10 or 12 occasionals, they’ve been meeting weekday mornings at 7:15 — with some adding Saturdays at a different restaurant in the non-summer months — for a light breakfast washed down with large doses of coffee, laughter and lies.
