‘Ottawa’ Blessed: Ottawa Family Reflects on Meeting with a Saint
Although he can’t remember the encounter, David Mountain is still proud to be able to say he’s met a saint.
The now 30-year-old was only two when Mother Teresa visited Ottawa back in 1988. Now, 28 years later, the nun who dedicated her life to caring for the sick and disabled is to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church on Sunday.
“Even though I was (young) and don’t remember, I still think it was something incredible and it’s something I’m proud of,” Mountain said Saturday, sitting in his mother’s living room looking at a picture of his younger self on his father’s lap meeting Mother Teresa.
At the time, his father Frank Mountain was at the Ottawa Rehabilitation Centre recovering from a car crash that broke his neck and left him in a wheelchair with limited use of his hands. His wife, Margaret, and five of their 10 children were visiting him in his room in Ward C on Sept. 16, when Frank received the surprise of his life.
