‘Ottawa’ Capital Facts: House of Commons Pages Had to be Under a Certain Height
In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Prior to 1978, pages in the House of Commons had to be boys and they had to be under a certain height. Parliamentarians feared boys taller than five-foot-six would block their view during debates.
