‘Ottawa’ Capital Facts: The Origin of Bank Street’s Name isn’t what you’d Expect
In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Bank Street, contrary to what some may think, was not named after a bank or family. In the 1800s, the street was only a block-long, stretching from Wellington Street to the “bank” of the Ottawa River. “Bank Street” was thus born.
