Living healthy and happy with naturotherapy

The constant drive for money causes some people to live hectic lifestyles, which in turn lead to an increase in stress levels, poor feeding habits and a host of other distortions in their lifestyle. This makes living healthy and happy quite farfetched.

Naturotherapy offers a natural solution to most of our everyday problems. According to Cabarrus Magazine, naturotherapy is “a system or method of treating disease that employs no surgery or synthetic drugs, but uses special diets, herbs, vitamins, massage, etc., to assist the natural healing processes.”

Experts in naturopathy believe that the body possess the ability to heal itself, and incorporating some changes in lifestyle yields positive results. Naturotherapy doesn’t only aim at treating symptoms, but also finding the root cause for it. Often times these changes are made through the use or organic foods, exercise, a health balanced lifestyle and treatments from other areas of complementary medicine.

Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.), Michelle Drains—owner and founder of Riverbirch Holistic Health on Church Street in Concord—has a number of clients including people seeking help with weight management, allergies/food sensitivities, chronic fatigue, diabetes, autoimmune disorder, women’s health, heart disease and gastrointestinal complaints, and so on.

“Usually, my first step is to sit down and talk with a client…90 minutes to two hours,” Drains explains.

“A lot of it is history, diet, mental health, hobbies, is there a support system at home, stress at home. What kind of foods do they crave. We’ll talk about a wellness plan, specific recommendations. It’s a lifestyle change. You didn’t get that way overnight. You never want to push the body for what it’s not ready for.”

Naturotherapy is completely natural, and free from the risks of surgeries and drugs which can cause multiple other complications. Though alternative medicine could be used in some cases, it is mostly herbal medicine and risk free—just like CBD gummies, a natural stress reliever.

“In lots of cases we provide patients with integrated medicine. I won’t say we’ve cured cancer, but along with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, alternative medicine is prescribed for effective pain management,” said Dr. Isaac Mathai, integrated medicine expert and founder of Soukya Holistic Healthcare Centre, in a TOI report.

Ecotheraphy—a practice that involves employing our natural environment to help us find balance—is also a naturopathic procedure. While the increase in today’s technology makes it increasingly difficult for people to spend quality time outdoors, this therapy offers a means of exploring the health benefits of nature.

The medication involves the use of natural locations —like parks, and also other therapies such as the use of plants, garden-related activities, animals and physical exercises—such as walking, cycling, jogging or doing yoga in a park.

“If you don’t like to be around too many people, or where it’s crowded and loud, walk around the greenway or in your back yard,” said Drains. “People can suffer from the winter blues, so we come up with strategies to get out in the environment, get sunlight, better air quality. Being physical outside gives the best benefit.”

According to a study published by health organization, Mind, “A nature walk reduced symptoms of depression in 71 percent of participants, compared to only 45 percent of those who took a walk through a shopping center.”

Today, quite a number of medical practitioners are utilizing naturotherapy for its immense benefits and as an addition or alternative to medication.

“The take-home message here is that spending time in nature can have profound benefits for your physical and psychological health,” said Dr. Joseph Mercola, a Chicago-based physician and advocate of natural medicine.

“In fact, nature deficits may even be at the heart of many people’s anxiety and general malcontent – they just don’t know it. Indoor living has become such a norm, many give no thought to the fact they haven’t been more than a few feet away from concrete in weeks, months or even years.”

In March 21017, members of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), gathered in Raleigh to promote a Naturopathic Doctors Certification bill that would build ““educational, board certification and continuing education standards which are consistent with established national standards. The bill will increase citizens’ access to safe and effective alternatives in healthcare, improve public safety in seeking out these alternatives, and decrease healthcare costs through a strong focus on preventative medicine and the utilization of natural, low-cost therapies.”

Though naturopathy is a great alternative to medication, there are still some concerns over some dangerous naturopathic treatments and doctors.

“Be sure to let your medical doctor (M.D.) know about any naturopathic treatment, and let your N.D. know about any conventional medications you are taking. Some treatments can interact with each other, and your healthcare practitioners will be better able to treat you if they know every therapy you are using,” said The University of Maryland Medical Center.
