Canada runs roughshod over hapless Venezuela defence
Venezuela could not hang with Canada on the court so they tried the old ‘beat them in the alley’ trick. That didn’t work either.
Venezuela committed three flagrant fouls in the first half — one sending big man Dwight Powell to the floor with a sickening thud — but Canada’s best half of the summer propelled the team to a 82-62 victory on Thursday.
Canada ran right through Venezuela’s hapless defence early on, passing the ball beautifully in collecting 14 assists on the first 17 buckets and ended up with 24 on 30 scores, a tremendous ratio. Point guard Cory Joseph had four of them and was the best player on the floor in the opening 20 minutes, stuffing the stat sheet, setting up easy scores, while completely shutting down his opponents at the other end. Joseph had a massive rejection and an incredibly difficult steal in the second quarter alone.
Joseph finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Nik Stauskas led Canada with 16 points and centre Kelly Olynyk added 14, eight rebounds and six assists.
