Senators’ goalie decisions look good early
Knowing they had to trade a goalie in the summer, the Senators first beefed up their depth at the position by signing college boy Matt O’Connor.
The early results of the move certainly looked good on them Wednesday at First Niagara Center.
O’Connor stopped all 18 shots he faced before being replaced by Chris Driedger at 9:26 of the second in what would become Ottawa’s first pre-season victory, a 5-2 decision over the Sabres.
Robin Lehner, the netminder the Senators dealt for a first round pick on draft day, had a forgettable Buffalo debut.
The big Swede allowed goals to Max McCormick, Alex Chiasson and Zack Stortini in a 3:26 span of the second before giving way to Andrey Makarov at the intermission. Mika Zibanejad scored on Markov in the third before Ryan Dzingel, who also had two assists, added an empty netter.
Over 40 minutes of work, Lehner faced 19 shots.
O’Connor admitted he couldn’t have asked for a better script Wednesday.
