Abuse of power in amateur sport a big issue, says Jenn Heil
Jenn Heil wants the resignation of Marcel Aubut as president of the Canadian Olympic Committee to serve as the start line for a nationwide conversation on abuse of power in amateur sport.
Aubut, a former owner of the Quebec Nordiques, resigned on Saturday amid allegations of sexual harassment and unwanted touching of female colleagues and subordinates.
“We’re talking directly about sexual harassment, but at a bigger level, we’re talking about an abuse of power,” Heil said Tuesday from Vancouver, where she won silver in moguls at the 2010 Winter Games. “This is not just an issue at the Canadian Olympic Committee. I’ve heard many stories about the abuse of power, whether it’s the relationship of a national sports organization to female coaches, who get passed over even though they are as qualified as their male counterparts.”
Heil said she feels fortunate, because her athletic story is a happy one.
