Upstart Astros blank Yankees in AL wild card victory
Two years removed from a 111-loss season, the upstart Houston Astros booted the game’s most storied franchise to the curb Tuesday night to kick off the 2015 MLB playoff tournament.
Granted, these New York Yankees — who went down to 3-0 in the American League Wild Card game — are a pale imitation of their fabled forbears, but the young, hungry and talented Astros have elbowed their way onto the game’s big stage far ahead of schedule. Who knows what they can do now that they’ve grabbed a toehold?
“We are definitely not expected to be here,” said Houston manager A.J. Hinch. “So I can play the underdog card a little bit with those guys, but those guys don’t want to hear it. They want to be expected to win. They want the pressure, and that’s because the makeup of this team is very, very special, and they push each other in a way that I can really appreciate.”
