‘Ottawa’ Thompson Takes Down MacDonald in Fight Night Finale
At the end of a long, long night at TD Place, Rory MacDonald was covered in blood, wearing the face of defeat.
MacDonald, the Vancouver native who now calls Montreal home, simply didn’t have the game to catch up to a quicker and slicker Stephen (Wonderboy) Thompson in the welterweight clash which concluded UFC Fight Night at TD Place Saturday.
Thompson gradually picked away at the crowd-favourite MacDonald to win a unanimous decision.
It was far from a slugfest — a snoozefest in the minds of many of the 11,000 on hand — but Thompson found enough holes in MacDonald’s defence to open up bloody gashes around his nose and left ear in the fifth and final round.
Thompson called it a “chess match”, surprised at MacDonald’s defence.
“I expected it to be a little bit more of a war,” said Thompson.
The loss was a disappointment for the crowd favourite and his fans.
