Kanata explosion charges sent to judge’s court
Labour charges against the Ottawa Police Services board and the City of Ottawa related to a blast during a training exercise will be heard by a judge, a court decided Thursday.
The police board and city face five charges each under the province’s Occupational Safety Act.
Three paramedics and two police officers were hurt in a blast during a training exercise June 18, 2014, on March Rd. An explosive charge went off at the wrong time.
The injured medics and cops were burned, despite wearing protective equipment.
The Ontario Ministry of Labour accuses the police board and city of not taking measures to prevent the injuries, such as making sure the explosive wasn’t loaded in a careless manner.
Justice of the peace Herb Kreling adjourned the case to Oct. 8 for a first appearance in front of a judge.
