Devils rally to down Senators in shootout
This didn’t have the storybook ending Chris Neil would have scripted.
But you still have to tip a cap to him.
Suiting up for game No. 900 of his remarkable career, the Senators’ winger served notice he’s still got lots to contribute with a Gordie Howe hat-trick but he was left with a sour taste in his mouth as Ottawa remained winless at home this season with a 5-4 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils.
Lee Stempniak, who sent this to OT, scored the game-deciding goal on Andrew (The Hamburglar) Hammond in the skills contest as the Senators blew a two-goal third-period lead and dropped their third straight at the Canadian Tire Centre this season in front of 16,578.
Mike Hoffman, Zack Smith and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the Senators in regulation while Stempniak tied it up in the dying seconds for the Devils as Adam Henrique, Travis Zajac and Tootoo also contributed in regulation.
Ottawa outshot New Jersey 39-32 through 65 minutes.
