Refugee forum shows ‘generous’ Ottawa

Mayor Jim Watson was “overwhelmed” by the city’s response to a public forum on Syrian refugee resettlement efforts Thursday evening.
Hundreds of people gathered inside City Hall, where Watson and others from various organizations talked about the different ways to help sponsor refugees.
Watson urged people to sponsor refugees or to donate towards the cause.
Various city-wide initiatives, including Refugee 613 and United Way Ottawa’s newly launched United for Refugees, were some of the organizations there to help those looking to sponsor Syrian refugees, volunteer or donate.
Karen Mahoney, a refugee settlement and outreach volunteer with the Catholic Centre for Immigrants, said she’s met a large number of people looking to sponsor refugees for the first time.
“This is fantastic … this says that Ottawa is a very loving, generous … city to live in.”
