Naomi Klein, Avi Lewis bring ‘This Changes Everything’ to the Mayfair
Bestselling writer Naomi Klein and filmmaker Avi Lewis are bringing their new film to the Mayfair Theatre Sunday night.
The documentary, based on Klein’s book This Changes Everything, follows the stories of communities around the world responding to the impact of climate change and capitalism through activism.
Lewis says the film is meant to have a hopeful message about what people can do about climate change.
The couple will hold a question-and-answer after the Ottawa screening.
Lewis says the first question they often hear is, “What can I do?”
“Even the act of going to a film and having a discussion afterwards and gathering in a room with people who are engaged in the issue and finding a way or a local campaign or struggle to get more involved in, these are the ways we are really going to make progress, by connecting with each other. Because alone it’s just too much,” he said.
The documentary had its world premier at the Toronto International Film Festival and it opens theatrically across Canada on Oct. 6.
Lewis says the timing worked well, leading into the federal election and the Paris climate talks starting at the end of November.
“We all agreed we wanted to get the film out quickly and in terms of the election, there is a recent poll that shows climate change is the number two issue on the mind of Canadians and the economy is number one. Our film connects the economic roots of the climate crises. The carbon in the air and economic system that put it there,” said Lewis.
