Catherine McKenna pulled off the biggest election night upset in the Ottawa area, upsetting popular incumbent Paul Dewar for an Ottawa Centre seat many felt was as safe as they came for the NDP.
The first woman ever elected to the progressive urban riding, McKenna scored more votes than any other Liberal candidate in the riding — including the four-term Mac Harb dynasty — and helped restore the local stature of the party, which had been battered and bruised in the riding, finishing a distant third in 2011.
“I’m obviously very excited about this. I was a candidate for 522 days and from the start it was my priority to get out and talk to residents, so we started knocking on doors and with my team we knocked on over 100,000 doors, so we did the riding twice,” said McKenna.
The riding was ranked first in the nation in voter turnout, at 82.2%, a 10-point increase over 2011.
