Grieving family says $24Gs of GoFundMe cash taken
A southwestern Ontario family grieving the loss of a husband and father alleges one of his friends used a crowdfunding website to profit from his death.
Roxanne Belanger says her 29-year-old brother Roger died in a car crash on July 28 on his way home to Norwich, 65 km east of London.
Belanger said a friend Roger had made online immediately offered to help the grief-stricken family. She set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his sons, Sebastien, 3, and Nicholas, 2, and their education.
“We were really touched,” Belanger said of the gesture. “We were also in shock and grieving and not thinking clearly. It wasn’t until a large amount of money was raised ($24,000) that we really started to think we needed to take the steps to have the account transferred to my sister-in-law. That’s when things started to go badly.”
The woman, who the family says is from Alberta, allegedly fell out of contact when they began to ask questions.
