Hurricane Patricia threatens Calgarians in Mexico; hundreds stranded, some escape
Calgary vacationers on Friday were fleeing the Puerto Vallarta area or scrambling for shelter there as the rampaging Hurricane Patricia bore down on them.
Calgary-based carrier WestJet cancelled Friday flights to the hot spot and is likely to suspend service further while rampaging winds closed in on Mexico’s Pacific coast, shutting down its airport.
Calgarian Aaron Locke, a frequent visitor to Mexico, sent a hurried Facebook message before taking cover.
“Tourists just started coming, I’m going to duck,” said Locke, apparently referring to a stampede of tourists seeking refuge.
He didn’t respond to further calls from the Sun.
