Canada Post suspends community box plan
In a complete about-face Monday, Canada Post put a screeching halt to austerity plans that would have replaced door-to-door mail delivery with community mailboxes.
Canada Post was facing pressure from the incoming Liberal government, who campaigned on a promise to reverse the postal service’s budget cuts.
The national carrier was also roundly criticized by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, and by residents in urban communities where door-to-door service had already been replaced by community mailboxes.
Several thousand Ottawa residents awoke Monday to community mailboxes, though it is unclear what will now become of them.
