‘Ottawa’ Jury Set for Jagtar Gill Murder Trial; Opening Arguments to Begin Friday
After screening more than 400 potential jurors over nearly four days, a 12-member jury panel has been chosen for a high-profile Ottawa murder trial.
Bhupinderpal Gill, 40, and Gurpreet Ronald, 37, were charged with first-degree murder in connection with the January 2014 death of Gill’s wife, Jagtar Gill.
The 43-year-old mother of three was found dead in her Barrhaven home with her throat slashed and her wrists cut. Her teenage daughter made the gruesome discovery.
The two accused were both OC Transpo bus drivers and lived in the same neighbourhood. They were arrested in April 2014, and have been in custody ever since.
Jury selection began on Monday, and was delayed after three women who were chosen to sit on the jury asked to be excused, saying they felt the evidence would be too traumatic for them to sit through.
Opening arguments by the Crown prosecutor and defence lawyers are set to begin tomorrow morning.
The trial is scheduled to take seven weeks, with more than three dozen witnesses expected to testify.
