‘Ottawa’ City to Pour oil on Troublesome Goose Eggs
The city has stirred up its pesky geese by scrambling their eggs.
Now it’s time to break out the oil.
Geese have been annoying people at city parks and beaches for years. Finding ways to shoo them away, or prevent them from nesting, has been a seasonal chore, especially when people hit the beaches.
The Goosebuster drones at Petrie Island have helped, but last year the city contracted an organization to sterilize the eggs before they hatch. The “egg addling” method had experts vigorously shaking the eggs to destroy the internal membranes. The method, which is recognized as a best practice by Environment Canada, is usually deemed successful when the person doing the shaking can hear the internal fluids sloshing around the inside the egg.
The city received a permit for egg addling from Environment Canada in April 2015.
