The death of 37-year-old Abdirahman Abdi following a weekend altercation with police has galvanized this city.
It’s overwhelming, it’s heartbreaking and it’s scary as hell.
And it could easily tear this city apart.
Lines have quickly been drawn in the sand.
There are those who find it easy to believe this is nothing but police brutality, a racist attack by strong officers against a scared man with mental health issues.
Some witness accounts suggest police didn’t let up on Abdi, that they used brute force against him.
Others refuse to believe the police did anything wrong, arguing Abdi was a victim of his own circumstances.
And then there’s everyone else in the middle, whose hearts ache at his death but just don’t understand what happened, who are deathly afraid at the prospect of what this death could really mean, but who want to at least wait until an independent Special Investigations Unit makes its determination.
