‘Ottawa’ Barrhaven Family Escapes with Dog But Left Homeless After two-alarm Fire

A Barrhaven family managed to escape safely with their dog but were left homeless after a two-alarm fire broke out in their home late Monday night.
Firefighters got a 911 call for a basement fire at 19 Westwinds Place, northeast of Woodroffe Avenue and Strandherd Drive, at 11:45 p.m.
When they arrived, the family had already gotten out and there were flames and heavy smoke inside the front door. Crews took a defensive stance, fighting the fire from outside the home.
An OC Transpo bus sheltered the family and police, paramedics, the Red Cross and Salvation Army were also on hand to help, the fire department said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
