Charges have been laid against a transport truck driver from Port Colborne after “dual wheels” flew off a tanker trailer on Highway 401 Friday morning and struck five other vehicles.

Police said the incident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. on the eastbound highway near Prescott, about 100 kilometres south of Ottawa.

The wheels struck two other large trucks and three passenger vehicles, which were all heavily damaged, but there were no injuries.

The tanker trailer was loaded with 30,000 kilograms of flammable liquid, but the tanker remained on its remaining wheels and the liquid did not escape.

The trucking company, Element Bulk Logistics, from Hannon Ont., near Hamilton, will face similar highway traffic charges, police said.
