Ottawa police surrounded an apartment on Preston Street for nearly six hours Sunday while they tried to arrest a man suspected of an assault that occurred nearby earlier that afternoon.

The assault occurred on Preston Street just north of the Queensway at about 2:30. Police believed the suspect had gone into the apartment building near the corner of Aberdeen Street, said Insp. Mike Maloney.

The apartment was empty but a suspect was arrested nearby without incident, Maloney said.

Aberdeen Street was reopened at about 8:30 p.m.
