‘Ottawa’ Police Collar Suspect After Assault, Standoff on Preston Street
Ottawa police surrounded an apartment on Preston Street for nearly six hours Sunday while they tried to arrest a man suspected of an assault that occurred nearby earlier that afternoon.
The assault occurred on Preston Street just north of the Queensway at about 2:30. Police believed the suspect had gone into the apartment building near the corner of Aberdeen Street, said Insp. Mike Maloney.
Officers believed the suspect might have a gun and called in the tactical team, he said.
After heavily armed, grey-suited officers broke down the apartment’s rear door, police sent a remote-controlled, camera-equipped robot inside to search for the suspect.
The apartment was empty but a suspect was arrested nearby without incident, Maloney said.
Aberdeen Street was reopened at about 8:30 p.m.
