‘Ottawa’ Capital Facts: Ottawa is Still Canada’s most tech-intensive city
In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Despite the meltdown of Nortel Networks in 2009-10, Ottawa remains the country’s most technology intensive city. About eight per cent of Ottawa’s employees work in high-tech firms, as classified by Statistics Canada numbers from 2016. While this is down from 14 per cent during the late stage of the tech bubble in 2001, it puts Ottawa well ahead of Kitchener-Waterloo (6.5 per cent) and Toronto (5.7 per cent). Even when you add Gatineau to the picture (where just 2.8 per cent of the workforce is in high-tech), the tech intensity of the National Capital Region is a country-leading 6.7 per cent.
