Malibu Home Belonging to Family of Michael Landon Up for Sale For $18 million
An 11-acre property in Malibu, California belonging to the family of late TV star Michael Landon, has been put up for sale.
Cindy Landon, made the decision move into the property three years ago, after she was ready to move out of the house she built with her late husband. Her plan was to get a building in town and while searching, she came across the property which she described as “a beautiful double-parcel beachfront property on Seafield Drive with an older house that needed some work.”
"The minute I saw it, it reminded me the house we lived in the south of France many years ago," Mrs. Landon said in a report. "The ocean view is spectacular. It’s also lushly green on the property with a gazebo and koi pond. The vibe is just right."
In late 2015, Cindy went on to purchase the property for $7.5 million and made major renovations to it with the help of renowned Malibu architect, Doug Burdge.
"I redid everything inside. The house is now upgraded with smart home technology, state-of-the-art appliances and all the high-quality finishes and amenities," said Ms. Landon, 61, a film producer known for The Game Changers (2018) and Sanctuary (2016).
The massive 6,904-square-root residence has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen, a wine cellar, a humidor and a media room with a wet bar. Occupants would definitely have more than enough room and may equally require new storage solutions to match their newly acquired home.
According to Mrs. Landon, the best part of the house is that "every room has amazing views. And the sliding glass walls blend the indoor and outdoor living seamlessly.”
Mrs. Landon had spent over $4 million renovating the property, which was completed two months ago. However, she had a change of heart when the time to move in came.
"I had intended to make it my new home, but I felt emotional to move out of my old house," she said. "It was a tough call."
The newly renovated beachfront house was put on the real estate market after much thought by Mrs. Landon. Her son, Sean Landon, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, was then assigned with the task of selling it.
Enlisted on the Multiple Listing Service on July 10, the asking price for the property was pegged at $18 million—putting into consideration the cost of renovation, the permitting process and the unique features of the house.
"We renovated the house down to the studs. Everything modern in Malibu is very rare," said Sean, who grew up in Malibu. He added that the extra parcel has the potential for a new structure.
Sean’s parents met on the set of award winning show, Little House on the Prairie, where his late father, Michael, starred as Charles Ingalls and his mother, Cindy, was an on-set makeup artist during the show’s nine-year stint.
For 14 years, Michael Landon was the star and producer of hit TV series, Bonanza. The couple were married from 1983, up until his death at the age of 54 in 1991.
In April, Hard Rock Cafe co-founder Peter Morton sold his oceanfront mansion in Malibu’s Carbon Beachto natural gas billionaire, Michael S. Smith and his wife, Iris for $110 million. The sale set a record for the highest price ever paid for a home in Los Angeles County—overtaking the Playboy Mansion, which sold for $100 million in 2016.
