North American team will have speed advantage on Canada
Older World Cup entries will likely be able to outhit, outsmart and out-trash talk the 23-and-under young guns comprising Team North America.
But they’ll have to catch them first. That speed advantage is one general manager Peter Chiarelli knows will be huge come September when many stars with 1980s’ birth dates will have to get the summer kinks out in a hurry.
“You’ve heard people talk about our young legs,” Chiarelli said Wednesday after being introduced as their general manager. “The forwards we have can skate and the D-men we’ll put in place can really skate, so it will be a really fast team and a real puck pursuit team. On any given night, we can surprise teams.
“More likely at the beginning of September (2016), we may have a certain edge because the guys are younger.”
Chiarelli, who is just starting a new GM day job with Connor McDavid and a cast of other high first rounders in Edmonton, will be joined by Chicago colleague Stan Bowman.
