Simmons: When it comes to David Price, just pay the man
How do you let David Price walk away?
How do you not find a way to pay him more, to offer term, to give him his own private jet stocked with popcorn, to let him buy the condo next door to Mike Babcock in Yorkville if he so chooses: How do you not do whatever it takes, anything and everything to keep him with the Toronto Blue Jays?
For now.
And in terms of the remainder of his career, for ever.
All Price has done since arriving in Toronto on that stunning day in late July is dazzle.
All he has been is the best starting pitcher in the American League.
He doesn’t have a fancy windup.
He doesn’t have a high-leg kick.
He almost pitches from the stretch. He’s unlike his contract — he’s economical on the mound.
But he delivers big. When he has his great stuff and when he doesn’t.
He delivers the way expensive rental pitchers are supposed to deliver — but rarely do.
