Stroman superb as Blue Jays creep closer to division title
Marcus Stroman was still in the process of getting his season started.
Ivan Nova was trying to save his.
In a way, they both got what they wanted but the Blue Jays got so much more as they squeezed out a 4-0 victory in the rubber match of this critical three-game series against the New York Yankees.
The victory improved Toronto’s first-place lead in the American League East to 3.5 games, with 10 games to play. Their magic number to clinch the division title sits at eight.
The Jays got all the offence late but Stroman did the heavy lifting early, tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits and one walk. He struck out five.
After Kevin Pillar’s two-out RBI-single broke a scoreless tie in the sixth, Russell Martin sealed the deal with a three-run homer with two outs in the seventh.
