Habs beat Penguins in NHL christening of Quebec City’s Videotron Centre
QUEBEC CITY — Sen. Jacques Demers needs a moment to himself.
On this, the historic day in which NHL hockey will be played for the first time at the new Videotron Centre — the crown jewel of Quebec City’s unbridled hockey passion — Demers wants to rekindle some of the wonderful memories he experienced in this community.
And what better place to do it than just across the parking lot in the historic Colisee, the long-time home of the Quebec Nordiques?
So here is Demers, basking in the solitude of an otherwise empty building, sitting in the seats and recalling some of the great moments that had transpired under this aging roof.
Hall of Famers Jean Beliveau, Guy Lafleur and Michel Goulet were junior hockey standouts here. Patrick Roy cut his coaching teeth here. Stars such as Goulet, Peter Stastny and, early in his career, a young Mats Sundin, made the NHL’s Quebec Nordiques a part of the rich cultural fabric here.
