Tiger-Cats struggle on offence, lose to Stampeders
The Jeff Mathews era started as many outside the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ locker room suspected it would.
With Mathews running the offence for the first time following the season-ending knee injury to quarterback Zach Collaros, the Ticats failed to gain traction when they had football on Friday night against the Calgary Stampeders at Tim Hortons Field.
Rene Paredes kicked a 37-yard field goal with no time left on the clock, giving Calgary a 23-20 win.
The Ticats got just a single touchdown from the offence in Mathews’ first start in the Canadian Football League.
Hamilton has lost three of its past four home games after going 11-0 (including a playoff victory) at THF after it opened last season.
A 59-yard catch-and-run by running back Michael Ford, who was signed to the practice roster earlier in the week, set up a one-yard run into the end zone by Mathews with just under seven minutes to play, giving the Ticats a 20-17 lead.
