Karlsson has become Captain Cool
Keep calm and carry on.
Those are words to live by for Erik Karlsson.
Karlsson’s one-year anniversary of being named captain of the Senators passed Thursday with little fanfare but Oct. 2, 2014 — the same day the club signed Bobby Ryan to a seven-year extension — the young Swede was given the ‘C’ to replace centre Jason Spezza after he was dealt to Dallas.
The 25-year-old Karlsson, who won his second Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman last season, does much of his leading by example but if there’s anything he learned it’s that the best bet is to never get too high, never get too low and try to remain on an even keel.
You know, you’re never as good as you think you are or as bad either. Speaking on the morning of the club’s final exhibition games against the Montreal Canadiens at the Canadian Tire Centre Saturday, Karlsson maintained that might be the biggest impression he was left with after last season.
