Despite cuts, all Leafs players still on the clock
Training camp may be over, but it’s safe to say the tryout is still ongoing.
The great Maple Leafs makeover may be well underway, but when the 2015-16 season begins Wednesday night at the Air Canada Centre, the roster will have a familiar look.
In fact, 13 of the Leafs players likely to be in new coach Mike Babcock’s lineup against the Montreal Canadiens were also listed on Randy Carlyle’s game sheet 52 weeks ago.
The difference, of course, is that just about everyone in this version of blue and white is on the clock, the one held by Babcock, team president Brendan Shanahan and new general manager Lou Lamoriello.
In addressing the team’s biggest round of cuts on Sunday — one that sent promising young players such as William Nylander, Kasperi Kapanen and Stuart Percy to start the season with the AHL Marlies — Lamoriello essentially said as much.
