Just 23 months after their championship, Saskatchewan Roughriders limping to end of two-win season
REGINA — Twenty-three months ago the Saskatchewan Roughriders won the Grey Cup here in Mosaic Stadium.
Of the 42 Grey Cups your correspondent has covered it provided the most memorable scene I’ve ever witnessed.
Downtown Regina was absolute gridlock. A media bus, attempting to get from the stadium to the hotel less than two kilometers away, took almost two hours. But it was a terrific tour of a town experiencing ecstasy.
Rider fans danced on top of cars, celebrated with drinks as they swarmed to the streets without ugly incident, running between cars, high-fiving and hugging complete strangers while fireworks were being launched from the roof of city hall.
The ‘Green Mile’ was the epicenter of it all, quite possibly the happiest place on earth that night after Saskatchewan’s 45-23 win in the home Grey Cup game.
