Blue Jays had to find way to keep Anthopoulos
Alex Anthopoulos is out as general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Sun has confirmed numerous early morning reports that Anthopoulos will not return to the team, after rejecting an offer to offer to remain in his position. His contract was set to expire on Saturday.
The shocking developing comes after the greatest Blue Jays season in memory – and one of the great seasons any general manager has ever had in any sport.
The departure of Anthopoulos coincidese with the arrival Monday of Mark Shapiro, the president of the club hired away from the Cleveland Indians to replace Paul Beeston, Apparently, Anthopoulos wasn’t willing to accept a GM’s position with the Jays with less than full GM responsibilities, sources say.
As recently as the weekend, Shapiro was convinced Anthopoulos would remain as general manager but indicated he would not be quoted on any Blue Jays matters until after he takes the position of president on Nov. 1.
