‘Ottawa’ Ottawa Fury FC can’t Pull Off Upset Against Vancouver Whitecaps in Canadian Championship
The Vancouver Whitecaps met the challenge at BC Place on Wednesday night.
Carl Robinson’s team overcame a 2-0 first-leg deficit to beat a pesky Ottawa Fury FC side 3-2 on aggregate and advance to the Amway Canadian Championship final.
Defending champion Vancouver will face Toronto FC over two legs on June 21 and 29 for the Voyageurs Cup and the right to represent Canada in the 2017/18 CONCACAF Champions League.
Ottawa came into this semifinal series as underdogs but the NASL club was full value for a 2-0 win at TD Place last week, which put the Caps in a precarious position.
With away goals as the first tie-breaker, Ottawa was still one strike away from flipping the script on Wednesday, despite being down 3-0 in the game.
The Caps, though, were relatively comfortable in the dying moments and Ottawa’s best chance came and went near the end of the first half, when Paolo Tornaghi denied Marcel De Jong in the box.
