‘Ottawa’ Brooke Henderson’s Fan Club Growing in a Hurry
SAMMAMISH, Wash. — As she came off a green and made her way to the next tee during the final round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at the Sahalee Country Club on Sunday, Brooke Henderson high-fived with a little girl, who looked maybe five or six or years old.
She wasn’t even tall enough for her head to be above the gallery ropes most of the time.
Henderson came striding off one green, the little girl offered her hand expectantly and Henderson slapped it. The little girl turned to her mother with a glow on her face like the sun and Henderson giggled and her face was similarly radiant.
The momentum of Henderson’s charge grew with her spectacular eagle from 100 feet on the par-5 11th hole, the explosion of noise among the cathedrals of Douglas firs and red cedars echoing out onto the course, serving notice something special was happening, an ominous sound for the competition and serving like a church bell to the masses who flocked to join Brooke’s Battalion.
