Wright Street fire was intentionally set, say Gatineau police
Gatineau police have launched a criminal investigation into a major fire in Hull Friday night.
Fire crews fought a fire in a mixed-use, three-storey building at 47 Wright Street for six hours before getting it under control early Saturday morning.
Sunday, police said fire investigators have handed over control of the case to them because the fire was intentionally set.
Since parts of the building are still unstable, police said their investigators may be there until Tuesday as they figure out how to safely look into the cause.
Eight people were displaced from their units above a ground-level convenience store because of the fire, according to fire officials.
The fire caused almost $700,000 damage to the building and its contents. Nobody was injured.
