Taverns and Troublemakers exhibition showcases Ottawa’s temperance movement
Five decades ago, if you wanted a drink in the former city of Nepean you were out of luck.
Nepean only officially ended its status as a dry community in 1965, and that’s one of many surprising facts to be learned in a new exhibition opening this Thursday at the Ottawa Central Archives building.

Taverns and Troublemakers chronicles the long history of the sale and consumption of alcohol in the Ottawa area, as well as the battles fought between those who wanted to sell liquor and temperance movement advocates who sought to stop them.
